A man from the Aran island of Inishmore who has been charged with a series of "very violent" assaults was remanded in custody at Galway District Court yesterday. Mr John jnr. O'Toole (24), of the American Bar, Kilronan, faces a number of charges of assaulting gardai and civilians on dates between June and August this year.

He is charged with assaulting Det Garda Brendan Kinneavy at Killeany, Inishmore, on June 20th, with assaulting Det Garda Gerard Roche at Kilronan Garda station on June 27th, and with assaulting Ms Niamh Seoighe at Kilronan on June 26th and Ms Maura Street at Joe Watty's public house on August 9th. He is to face further charges at Kilronan Court on September 2nd.

Judge Michael Patwell refused bail and remanded Mr O'Toole in custody until August 31st.
