A Dublin man serving three life terms for the attempted murder of a south London gangster had his appeal against conviction dismissed at the Old Bailey yesterday.

Michael Boyle (49), a Garda informant of Tyrconnel Road, Dublin, who boasted of links to the IRA and INLA, had maintained he was acting under duress, fearing for the lives of his girlfriend and her daughter, when he carried out the shooting.

In September 1995 Mr Tony Brindle (33) survived an onslaught of shots from Boyle before police, disguised as gasmen, opened fire on Boyle.
