A rare basket-hilted cavalry backsword dating from the late 17th century is one of many historic items in an Irish collection to be auctioned next Sunday in the James Adams Salesrooms, Dublin.

The sword was carried at the Battle of the Boyne by William Frith of Derrynargan, Co Fermanagh - a Williamite supporter, serving in Conyngham's Dragoons.

This specialist Irish Collectables Auction, comprising 712 lots, is dedicated entirely to items of Irish interest, and includes banknotes, coins and militaria and agricultural, sporting and political medals and badges.
