The United Nations Human Rights Commissioner, Mrs Mary Robinson, received more than 42,000 Trocaire anti-slavery campaign postcards in Dublin yesterday.

The postcards, signed by the public, ask Mrs Robinson to make abolishing slavery is a priority for her office and call for measures to eliminate the used of bonded labour worldwide.

Trocaire has won a public relations industry award for its slavery awareness postcard campaign. The postcards included those received by Mrs Robinson yesterday and a further 36,000 urging the Government to take action at international level.

Trocaire's global gift campaign was also a winner at the annual awards, presented by the Northern Secretary, Dr John Reid, in Dublin on Thursday night.
