Anniversary of 1916 on Easter Sunday

The anniversary of the 1916 rising will be marked on Easter Sunday at a ceremony to be held outside the GPO in Dublin.

The anniversary of the 1916 rising will be marked on Easter Sunday at a ceremony to be held outside the GPO in Dublin.

The ceremony will be led by President Mary McAleese, the Taoiseach and the Minister of Defence, Willie O'Dea.

The Army brass band will attend along with 350 members of the Defence Forces,  including members of the Air Corps, Naval Service and Defence Reserve. There will also be an Air Corps fly past.

The national flag will be lowered at noon when the 1916 Proclamation will be read out by an Army officer.

The President will then lay a wreath to commemorate all those who died in the Rising. A minute's silence will be observed before the flag is raised again to the sound of the National Anthem.

Relatives of the 1916 leaders will be invited to a reception hosted by the Minister of Defence after the ceremony.

All members of the public wishing to attend the ceremony are advised to take up their places in the public viewing area outside the GPO by 11.30am where there will be large video screens showing the proceedings.
