The 29-year-old England international, who missed much of last season with an achilles tendon injury, said he was "pretty close to an agreement" with the premier league club.

"I am fine now and hope the contract business will be sorted out very soon," Anderton was quoted as saying by the Evening Standard today.

"We are pretty close to an agreement. We are nearly there. I have never said I wanted to leave. I want to be successful at the club and am looking forward to working with the boss."
