Defending champions New Zealand defeated sevens specialists Fiji 29-5 to lift the Hong Kong Sevens title today for the eighth time.

The New Zealanders completely outclassed a hapless Fiji who were hit by a series of unusual handling errors and wasted opportunities.

A dazzling run by last year's player of the tournament, Karl Te Nana, saw Chris Masoe burst through the Fijian line to open the Kiwis' five-try account in the third minute.

Jared Going, the only other player from last year's winning side, then outpaced the Fijian defence down the right wing to score in the corner and give New Zealand a 10-0 lead.

A third try in the eighth minute by Hayden Reid followed by touchdowns from John Leo'o and Jared Going left the Fijians trailing 29-0 at half time.

Fiji's troubles were compounded when Atunaisa Vunivalu was given two minutes in the sin bin by referee Wayne Erickson for strong-arming his opposite number.
