The survivor of an infamous 1972 Andes plane crash that inspired the film Aliveis visiting Ireland this week on a rugby tour.

Dr Roberto Canessa, who was one of only 16 passengers who survived the disaster, is to speak about his experiences at an event at Croke Park in Dublin tomorrow.

Dr Canessa (55) is a member of the Old Christians Past Pupils' Rugby Club in Uruguay that was invited to Dublin on a four-game tour by Lansdowne and Skerries clubs.

In recent years Dr Canessa has developed a career as a speaker on motivation, teamwork and personal potential as well as focusing on charity work.

There were 45 passengers on the Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 that crashed into the Andes mountains on October 13 1972. The story is told in the best-selling 1974 book by Piers Paul Read and the 1993 film, Alive, starring Ethan Hawke.

Dr Canessa is also due to appear as a guest on The Late Late Showon Friday night.

Monies raised are being used to fund the Old Christians rugby tour, with a donation also going to the Uruguayan Rugby Injury Fund.
