The Taoiseach, Mr Ahern, will meet members of the Macroom and District Concerned Citizens Group in the town tomorrow during a one-day visit to Cork.

A spokesman for the group, which held a meeting attended by more than 400 people in Macroom last Monday night, said they will outline to the Taoiseach their claims that the presence of up to 140 asylum-seekers to be housed in the town could create a public nuisance, as its population is fewer than 5,000.

The spokesman also claimed that the town does not have the infrastructure necessary to help refugees to integrate well.

An official of the Directorate of Asylum-Seekers has arrived in Macroom to vet the 35-bedroom Lynch's Lodge Hotel on its outskirts, and to determine the availability of school places.

Some local people have said that the lodge has the only conference facilities in Macroom and claims these would be lost to the town if refugees move in.

The Office of Public Works has confirmed that negotiations for the purchase of Lynch's Lodge are at an advanced stage but it is unlikely that contracts will be signed before next month.

A spokesman for the Department of Justice said no firm date had been set for the arrival of refugees in Macroom.

He confirmed that the maximum number being considered for accommodation in the town was 140. It had yet to be established how that number would be broken down into family groups and single people.

"Dates have not been set and there's no question of 140 refugees arriving together. They will take up the accommodation on a phased basis," the spokesman said.

Mr Jerry Grey, who chaired Monday's meeting, said local people became aware by hearsay that Macroom was to receive asylum-seekers.

"We have no direct knowledge of how many are coming or what the actual position is. We will form a committee within the next few days to deal specifically with the situation and hopefully then we will be given all the relevant data," Mr Grey added.
