The Afghan embassy in Saudi Arabia closed today, a day after the Saudi government announced it had severed relations with Afghanistan's Taliban regime for harbouring "terrorists".

Saudi police were posted in front of the mission, which was no longer flying the Afghan flag, it has been reported.

The mission will be "completely shut down on Thursday" when a 48-hour deadline Riyadh gave Afghan diplomats to leave the country runs out, the police said.

The Saudi government announced yeasterday that "all relations with the Taliban are cut," saying the decision had been taken because the Islamic militia had not responded to "contacts and initiatives undertaken by Saudi Arabia to convince them to stop harbouring and training terrorists."

The move, close on the heels of the United Arab Emirates' decision Saturday to cut ties with the Taliban, further tightens the noose around Afghanistan's Islamist ruling militia, which Riyadh helped create, notably by granting substantial financial aid.
