Seventeen militants launched the attack before dawn. The suicide bombers blew themselves up at the gate of the compound where police and government officials live in Kamdesh district.

Gunmen then followed, opening fire.

Four women who lived in the compound, three police officers and three members of a government-sponsored militia were killed.

The overnight fighting ended today when the final attackers were dead.

Kamdesh district is in a mountainous area of the province near the Pakistani border.
