Eight drug addicts died in Dublin due to "an unusual organism" in a batch of "bad heroin" last May and June, and other deaths from the same cause were recorded in Glasgow, an inquest at Dublin City Coroner's Court heard yesterday.

Mr Joseph Cleary (47) a married man of Donore Avenue, Dublin, was the first person to die due to clostridium novii, a strain of a bacterium which was resistant to the drugs in common use at the time.
