Actor, playwright, author, composer, lyricist and singer Anthony Newley, who died of cancer yesterday at 67. Newley died at home in Florida, his friend Herbert Kretzmer said, "in the arms of his friend and partner Gina Fratini".

Married three times and with four children, Newley shot to fame as the Artful Dodger in the 1948 film version of Oliver Twist.

He became an international star, had a series of hit records, and appeared in several films including Dr Dolittle and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. He co-wrote and starred in the musical Stop the World - I Want To Get Off. Among his best-selling hit singles were What Kind Of Fool Am I?, The Candy Man and Goldfinger.
