AN ACTION for damages taken against the former Co Clare GP Dr Paschal Carmody over his treatment of a patient in 2000 was settled by Dr Carmody’s insurance company earlier this month, it has emerged.

The civil case was taken by Wicklow woman Alberta Hill whose late husband Maxwell was treated by Dr Carmody in Killaloe, Co Clare, in June 2000. Dr Carmody treated him for chest pain.

The action for damages was settled on July 8th last with Dr Carmody’s insurance company, the Medical Protection Society, without admission of liability.

It is understood the action was settled for a substantial sum.

The action had been set down for hearing in the High Court but was settled in advance.

Confirming the settlement of her claim yesterday, Mrs Hill told The Irish Times she now looked forward to putting the matter behind her.

She thanked her legal firm, Augustus Cullen Law, and her family and friends, as well as Patient Focus for its support during the litigation.
