A man who was paralysed from the waist down after a road accident is to receive £1,250,000 compensation, the High Court in Belfast heard yesterday.

Mr David Bickerstaff (23), from Ballygowan Road, Banbridge, Co Down, suffered severe spinal injuries when his motorcycle was in collision with a car four years ago. At the time he was an apprentice cabinetmaker, but had to gave up his job and is now confined to a wheelchair.

The compensation was awarded against James Gallagher, from Maryville Drive, Banbridge, the driver of the car involved in the crash. The action was settled out of court.
