Last Saturday night for Derek O'Toole, a 24-year-old shop worker, and his friends, began as usual with a few games of pool, before they continued on to the Arc bar, near the Liffey Valley Shopping Centre, shortly before midnight.

2.30amHe leaves the bar in the company of his close friend, Christopher Brennan, who lives around the corner from him in Neilstown, Clondalkin, and Ruta Dorolyte, another friend, who had been on a night out with work colleagues. According to Brennan, the men had drunk seven pints each during the evening. This was followed by "one small drink" and some food back in Brennan's house.

4.05amThe taxi called by Brennan arrives for Ruta Dorolyte. Derek O'Toole offers to see her safely home to Lucan. Once there, the taxi drives away.

5amO'Toole is struck by a car, reportedly while lying prostrate on Lucan's main street. Dublin Fire Brigade, summoned by a 999 call, then alerts the Garda.
