No-one was hurt and guests were able to return to their rooms after fire fighters tackled the blazes.

Around 400 guests were evacuated from the Gresham Hotel at 3.30 am after a fire broke out in a store room. Around 30 firefighters battled for an hour to extinguish the flames in the disused store at the back of the hotel.

Dublin Fire Brigade has begun an investigation into fire and another which happened at the Regency Hotel in Drumcondra in the north of the city.

Some 400 people were evacuated after smoke was seen coming from a lift shaft in the new section of the building.

The alert was raised after 1am and lasted for around 30 minutes.

In a separate incident a fire appliance has been put out of service after an attack in Ballymun, north Dublin, last night.

Firefighters tackling a blaze at a builders' yard came under attack from stone throwers, and a number of windows in the appliance were smashed. None of the firefighters were injured.
