TESTS ON drinking water in 60 houses in Thurles, Co Tipperary, have revealed elevated levels of lead.

TESTS ON drinking water in 60 houses in Thurles, Co Tipperary, have revealed elevated levels of lead.

The tests carried out by the Health Service Executive and North Tipperary Council revealed elevated levels at seven locations in the town, with one house revealing a level seven times above the acceptable norm.

Areas which have elevated levels of lead include Kincora Terrace, Delcassin Terrace, part of Derheen, Moyne Terrace, McDonagh Terrace, Cabra Terrace and Stradavoher.

Senior council engineer Jim Maguire confirmed that the council would provide water tankers for the affected areas and representatives from the council called to each householder yesterday morning to notify them of the results.

He also confirmed that the council has issued unfit water notices to each of the affected houses, and warned that boiling water does not remove lead.
