The number of drink-driving incidents recorded over the August bank holiday weekend rose by almost 60 in comparison to the same weekend last year, according to provisional figures released by gardaí yesterday.
Statistics for the period from August 3rd-6th show 384 drink-driving incidents were recorded, compared to 327 such incidents for the August bank holiday weekend in 2006.
Gardaí said yesterday that enforcement activities in this area of road safety would continue to be prioritised.
Three people died on the roads this bank holiday weekend compared to five who died last year.
So far this year there have been 204 deaths on the roads, which is 35 fewer than in the corresponding period of 2006.
In spite of the reduced number of fatalities, gardaí say they are still concerned about the level of road deaths and related injuries occurring across the State.
