An 83-year-old antiques dealer whose back was injured when she was knocked down while crossing the road has been awarded £18,500 damages at the Circuit Civil court. Judge Bryan McMahon said he had been struck by the resilience and fortitude of Ms Norah Breen, of The Sweepstakes, Ballsbridge, Dublin, who had been thrown in the air and tossed on her head in the accident 18 months ago.

Mr John Henessy, counsel for Ms Breen, told the court she had sustained fractures of three lumbar vertebrae and a cut eyebrow. Liability for the accident had been conceded by the car driver.

The judge awarded her £16,000 general damages with £2,500 special damages to cover hospital and medical costs and loss of commission as an antiques consultant.
