A herd of 135 cattle belonging to a father and son from Westport, Co Mayo, is to be slaughtered by the Department of Agriculture, by order of a Galway Circuit Court judge.

Judge Carroll Moran ruled last week that the cattle, on the farms of Mr Patrick Kearns, Mitchfield, Westport, and Mr John Kearns, Owenwee, be destroyed, after finding that the Department had "overwhelmingly" proved a case against them in regard to inconsistencies in the cattle's identifications.
