MORE than 10,000 Leaving Certificate exam results were appealed last year and just under 1,000 of them were upgraded, according to the Minister for Education, Ms Breathnach.
She told Fianna Fail's education spokesman Mr Micheal Martin that a total of 391,999 grades were awarded on exam subjects in 1996, including all subjects and all students. Of those, 10,436 exam results were appealed and 961 papers were upgraded.
Mr Martin asked the Minister to consider an independent exam appeal system. "Is she not concerned that over 10,000 students are appealing their results? This suggests a lack of confidence in the system."
