"I read with great interest Sylvia Briggs's trouble trying to get a table for one in her hotel (The perils of going solo, last week). I had the same trouble last year when on holiday in Jersey, in the Channel Islands. I went to a very good restaurant for my lunch knowing I would have to queue, as it is so popular. I was astounded to be told when it got to my turn that they could not give me a table, as it would mean them losing out on the empty chairs at my table. That happened in two of the best restaurants on the island. What is one supposed to do, go to McDonald's? I always holiday on my own and have never come across this before. It's as bad as all the great hotel deals for two people. I have never seen a great offer for a single person, just large supplements."
