Travel Gear: Pocket a portable keyboard, staying hostel-safe and the cloud card to connect your camera

Tom Kelly’s gadgets for on the go

Zagg Pocket Keyboard
This portable Zagg Keyboard is a wireless carry-along for your iPhone or iPad, folding up longways to fit in a pocket or handbag. Opened out it's about 85 per cent the size of a regular keyboard, but usefully it folds between the lines of keys for a more familiar character layout. Folded it powers down automatically and makes a neat 20cm x 6cm case with magnets keeping it that way. A small gripe is US keys being standard, but it's hardly a deal breaker.

FlareSafe

A practical three-in-one here for the cautious traveller. Or her or his parents perhaps. It’s got a smoke detector, a personal alarm and a powerful LED torch all in one. This makes for a practical bundle, particularly for a backpacker or hostel hopper. The smoke detector uses an infrared optical sensor and activates a loud 110-decibel alarm as well as the light. And LEDs mean long life. The body is tough and waterproof, and comes with a handy lanyard for hanging off your dorm bedpost.

Eyefi Mobi Pro Wi-Fi SD Card

Plenty of modern cameras have integrated Wi-Fi yet Eyefi’s smart new SD card might offer a more flexible option. You can wirelessly transfer images to your smartphone or computer. Or send them to Eyefi’s own cloud service (a year’s free subscription with the card). It can even create its own Wi-Fi hotspot if you want to use a local network. Meaning you can share, tag and organise shots in all sorts of different ways with unlimited storage to play with. In fact the card itself comes with up to 32GB memory, which the average snapper will find more than adequate for a photogenic trip away.
