Travel Gear: making travel easier

Mobile power for a full festival, dash cam smarts and 35,000 golf courses on your wrist

1. Box Portable Tablet Charger

Box is positioning its 6000mAh portable battery for use with tablets, which are often too power-hungry to be recharged off standard models for mobiles. It can fully power-up your iPad, Galaxy or Nexus. It will also deliver four full recharging cycles to the average smartphone if you find yourself off-grid. Or to put it another way: a full festival, a hiking weekend up the hills or even long haul to Australia. All this from a unit about the size of an iPhone 6. Dual USB slots allow two devices to charge simultaneously.

2. Nextbase Dash Cam 312GW

Once YouTube started showing footage of everything from sky-scorching meteors to wacky races driving in Russia, it was inevitable that dash cams – dashboard- mounted cameras that record your field of vision – would go mainstream. Taxi drivers have adapted early, with some cabs now like a TV studio. Insurance companies like them too. This smart mid-range one from Nextbase clips magnetically to the car mount to power-up. Wifi syncing lets you view and share footage on your phone. Now you just need something to happen.

3. Bushnell Neo Ion Golf Watch

Smartwatches are permeating leisure activities everywhere. Some general models have golf functions, but Bushnell’s is niche. Its Neo Ion has GPS, with hole by hole data on more than 35,000 courses across the world. There’s a five language menu and it’s legal for tournament play. Of course it’s waterproof, scratch-proof, and they claim you’ll get three rounds from a single charge. Unfortunately, it just won’t straighten that wayward swing.
