Travel Gear: Folding e-bike, camping cutlery and hard cases

An electric bicycle, an elite penknife and the toughest luggage you’ll need

Solex by Mobiky Electric Bike

The love child of French bike companies Solex and Mobiky, this is claimed to be the simplest folding electric bike around. An expert pair of hands can fold up the alloy frame in just five seconds to take it on the train with you or stash it in the corner of the office. With Shimano Nexus 3 or 7 speeds, an integrated LED and a range up to 45km, it boasts an impressive spec for an e-bike that's only 85cm x 85cm x 30cm when folded. So let the bike do the work: no need to arrive in a lather – until you have to remember how to fold it up again.

Buck TravelMate camping tool

Not exactly pocket-sized, the US-made Buck TravelMate "slices, dices, spreads and serves". There's a flathead screwdriver in there, as well as can and bottle openers, a BBQ scraper, a fork and a serrated knife that's wide and bendy for easy spreading. It's all held in a sheath with an antimicrobial finish to keep bacteria at bay, although it is also dishwasher-safe. Not that you'll necessarily have one of those with you camping.

Pelican ProGear Luggage

Pelican has been the go-to travel brand for many photographers and film crews for quite a while, with a near indestructible range and customisable interiors. Now it's launching an Elite Luggage offering for the rest of us. Certainly our baggage gets tougher treatment going through airports than we might like to think. These hard cases are watertight, crushproof to 680kg (1,500lb) and yet surprisingly light. TSA-approved locks are built-in, and everything is industrial-gnarly. The only concession is they do come in a selection of colours. With lots of don't-mess-with-me black.
