Burrishoole Walking Festival

The annual Co Mayo festival takes place over the June bank-holiday weekend (May 30th-June 1st). Spanning the area between the villages of Mulrany and Newport (below), it will offer a choice of medium and challenging graded walks. All the walks are guided. Saturday afternoon will see the annual barbecue at Derradda Community Centre, which will also host a social gathering each evening. A unique feature of the festival is the celebration of Mass at Ochilly Mass Rock. There is a registration fee, but food, refreshment and transport are provided for walkers. E-mail tcarolan@ southmayo.com or call Sinéad on 087-2249679.

Burren May birdsong

The Burren, in Co Clare, is a haven for songbirds, including species such as the cuckoo, which have become scarce in many parts of Ireland. There are 20 or so songbirds to be found in the Burren, and an engaging morning can be spent learning and identifying their various songs. Experienced ornithologist Gordon D’Arcy will lead a group from Gregans Castle Hotel on Saturday, May 9th. At least two habitats near Ballyvaughan will be visited. No previous birdwatching experience is required, and participants are advised to come prepared for a day in the field, bringing weatherproof gear, sensible footwear, binoculars and a notebook. See www.gregans.ie, e-mail stay@gregans.ie or call 065-7077005.
