If you've ever been tempted to try a ski holiday, but were put off by the exorbitant cost of ski gear, boy have we got a solution for you - nude skiing. And no, we're not taking the piste.

The Obertraun Nude Ski Trail is a 4km cross-country loop high in upper Austria frequented entirely by skiers clad only in their birthday suit - plus ski boots of course.

Since Crested Butte, the well-named US resort, outlawed its Naked Ski Days in the 1990s, Obertraun stands proud as the world's best known nude-ski holiday destination.

If there's a higher concentration of ski buffs in the buff anywhere on the planet, we have yet to hear of it.

Be warned though, as extreme sports go, naked skiing is particularly hard on the extremities.

At the very least it's a delicate balancing requiring the avoidance of both sunburn and frost bite. And if you're used to holidaying au naturel in summer time, you might find the withering effects of the cold a tad disconcerting too.

On the accommodation front, check out Gastehaus Luehrmann (Gastehaus Luehrmann, Vorberg, Ramsau am Dachstein, 0043-3687- 81986 or www.luehrmann.at) a ski lodge in the area devoted to nude skiers.

Just over an hour from Salzburg airport, prices for December start at €259 per person for a three-day stay, half board, with two days' ski pass and complementary bottle of wine thrown in.

Return flights to Salzburg with Aer Lingus cost around €250 and, best of all, as a nude skier, you're unlikely to be hit with excess baggage charges.
