Green Wellies
Airfield House, Dublin
THE ONLY way to really explain to children where food comes is from is to bring them to a farm. Green Wellies is a new young-farmers programme at Airfield, Dublin's urban farm, on the southside of the city, in Dundrum. It sounds just the thing for young people (ages 11-14) who love animals and are interested in finding out what it takes to become a farmer.
A four-week morning course begins today (€50), but it's possible to book a single session (€15), in which farmer Eamon Younge will explain farm management and animal care.
A Green Wellies session might be just the Christmas present for someone passionate about animals. Participants must be prepared to get muddy.
• Something for younger kidsThis afternoon, at 2.30pm, Eamon Younge will lead a tour of the farm and introduce the animals. Betty and Prudence, two saddleback pigs, are the stars.
• What to wearWellies and warm clothes.

• Travel tipGet the Luas. The traffic jams around Dundrum shopping centre are murder at this time of year. Get off the Sandyford Green line at Balally. Leave the station, turn right and follow the Wyckham bypass up the hill, swinging around to the right.
