Design Week, the annual countrywide focus on all aspects of design, has been a bit on the adult side in the past, but this year some of the events have been organised with children in mind.
The two final children’s events are a family day at the National Print Museum, on Haddington Road in Dublin 4, today from noon until 5pm, and a design-a-poster workshop at Dublin City Gallery – the Hugh Lane – on Parnell Square in Dublin, tomorrow from 2pm until 4pm.
Family days at the print museum are unusual in that, as well as watching professional demonstrations of old printing techniques, children get to have a go, too. In today’s free session children can compose and print their names and make printer’s hats.
Older children tend not to get much of a look-in at free kids’ events, but tomorrow’s poster workshop is for ages 11 and older. After a guided tour of the Hugh Lane, a professional artist helps them design a poster or advertisement for the gallery.
It’s worth keeping an eye out for future events at Co Waterford’s Workhouse Studios – in the renovated chapel of Kilmacthomas Workhouse, which was built in 1851 to receive Famine victims – which has been busy all week with hands-on events for children (above).
