** Staying fit on holiday requires more than a little motivation. Most of us could do with a gadget that provides the impetus to get out and move. The Garmin Forerunner 50 is a heart-rate monitor that can be coupled with a foot cadence monitor or a cycling speed and distance measurer. Users can wirelessly download their workouts to a computer and follow their training progress via graphs. It can be satisfying to use as a heart-rate monitor alone, if just to push you out of your comfort zone on a morning cycle into the office. The watch can store seven hours of data before you need to transfer it to the Garmin training site. It costs €62.30 from www.mapandcompass outdoors.com, which includes heart-rate strap and USB receiver.

** Irish male grooming website 4men.ie says its biggest-selling item is the Razorpit blade sharpener – a handy little sharpening device that extends the life of most expensive multiblade razors, such as the Gillette Mach 3. A few strokes against the Razorpit’s silicon plate sharpens the blade and removes the hair and skin that might otherwise dull the razor’s edge. Users will get at least 150 shaves per blade cartridge, the makers claim. It costs €22.95 from www.4men.ie.

** They should hand these things out in Galway: the SteriPen Journey is a battery-powered hand-held water purifier that uses ultraviolet light to kill bacteria, viruses and protozoa. The makers vow that it will kill 99.99 per cent of little nasties. It takes approximately 50 seconds to sterilise half a litre of water, and at 128g the unit won’t tip you over your baggage allowance. www.steripen.com.
