The Kilcock Art Gallery is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, with artists such as Michael Flaherty, Trevor Geoghegan, Patrick Cahill, Mike Fitzharris, Elizabeth Cope and John Behan among the company of sculptors and painters whose work is exhibited there.

It's worth a detour off the N4 on your way to and from the west to visit gallerist Breda Smyth's current summer show, with Fiona Smith Darragh's sculptures of birds in patinated bronze flying through the gallery with grace and speed, from dunlins, to curlews and egrets. Kilkock Art Gallery is on School Street, (01-6287619). www.kilcockartgallery.com.

Fiona Smith Darragh's work will also be shown at the Jorgensen Fine Art Gallery in Molesworth Street, Dublin 2 in August (see www.fsmithdarragh.com).
