Readers and writers, you did not let us down. A staggering 4,200 of you entered the Powers Short Story Competition in the hope of winning the €10,000 prize.

We asked for a very short story, 450 words or so, on the theme Celebrating What Truly Matters, and you’ve obliged with tales of love and friendship and recession-beating moments. To the writers who helped you along with way with their advice – Maeve Binchy, Kevin Barry, Claire Kilroy and John Boyne – thank you all.

The winning story will be published in this magazine on May 12th. A further 40 stories, along with the winning entry, will be published later this year by Powers Whiskey, in an anthology to be sold in aid of The Irish Hospice Foundation.
