Picture clues

Where do artists get their inspiration? How about from crossword clues that could well have come from this paper’s very own Crosaire? That was the starting point for the 80 artists whose work will be on display this month as part of Scribblebox in Bombhouse, one of Dublin’s newest art studio and gallery complexes.

In the former warehouse, you can see what artists have made of clues such as: “I’d gotten involved with a dusky shark”; “Around the mouth of the blooming beast”; and “Not no wing where it’s no light matter . . .” Artists involved include Gaetan Billault, whose work is pictured left, Natacha Muller, Brian Gallagher, Erin Hermosa and CIRCA magazine’s editor, Peter FitzGerald.

“We were attempting to complete a cryptic crossword in the midst of a creative lull,” say Emma Moore and Eric Walsh, two of the organisers, “and several of us were struck by the powerful visuals conjured up by the clues.” The work is for sale, and with many of Ireland’s emerging talents taking part, you never know what you might find.
