Our Wedding Story: A proposal on top of a mountain

After pretending to propose for about a year, Daniel Searle finally did in a special place

Sally and Daniel, both 30, met through mutual friends as students at UCD.

In May 2014, Daniel, from Rathmines, proposed on top of Errigal mountain in Gaoth Dobhair, a special place for Sally’s family.

“Daniel had been pretending to propose for about a year before so when he got down on one knee I thought he was going to tell me he was ‘just tying his shoelaces’ again,” says Sally, a solicitor from Sandyford, Co Dublin, with a laugh.

The couple married on September 18th, 2015, in the Blue Church in Kilternan and celebrated afterwards at a reception in Trudder Lodge.

The bride’s uncle, Paddy Glackin and Hugh Gallagher from Hiúdaí Beag’s pub in Gaoth Dobhair played music during the ceremony and later on that day.

Sally, who wore a Rime Arodaky dress from the White Gallery, was especially grateful for both families’ enthusiasm and support. She says it “made Daniel and I even more excited”.

Her parents are Aileen and Michael and Daniel’s are Jennifer and John.

Bridesmaids were Sally’s sisters, Hannah and Leah, and friend Amanda George, who travelled home from Australia for the occasion. Christopher, Daniel’s brother, was best man and the bride’s brother Barra was groomsman with friend Ben Grogan.

The couple's friend Cillian sang Candy by Paolo Nutini for their first dance as newlyweds and the Papa Zitas played after dinner. Sally's favourite parts of the day were, "walking down the aisle to Daniel and listening to my dad's speech, which was probably the proudest moment of my life."

And Daniel’s? “Watching Sally walk down the aisle.”
