Quality and reliability: *****

There could be no other score apart from five stars for the Avensis on this front. It is a really well-built car, with an incredible record for reliability. Owners are happy, and that is why it is Ireland's top-selling large family car and will probably stay that way for a while.

Performance: ****

Unlike some 1.6-litre cars this size, the Avensis's 110bhp entry-level engine feels actually quite good. The 127bhp 1.8-litre engine feels more urgent and you don't have to work it as hard. The diesels make sense if you do a lot of mileage, because they provide a more relaxed drive. Choose between a 114bhp 2.0-litre, and a really strong 150bhp 2.2-litre diesel.

At the wheel: ****

The Avensis is all about comfort and ease of use, and the cabin is well laid out. It is certainly well constructed and the plastics are good quality. The drive is not as tight as the Mondeo, but the handling is good.

Space and comfort: ****

No problems with space in the Avensis - this is a big car with a huge boot (510 litres) and there is plenty of head and legroom. A great car for anyone who spends a lot of time behind the wheel, because it is incredibly comfortable.

Safety: *****

Achieved one of the highest ever scores in the Euro NCAP safety test. Nine airbags are standard. Both brake and clutch pedals retract to avoid driver's injuries in a crash. ABS is fitted with Electronic Brake-force distribution and Brake Assist.

Running costs and depreciation: ****

The Avensis is superb at holding its value and this is down to its incredible reputation. As these cars have such frugal engines and are so easy to service, running and servicing costs are among the best in the class.

THE CONCLUSIONS:

For:well built, reliable, safe, decent resale value

Against:a little dull, new version due within a few months

Irish Times verdict:it might not be thrilling and starting to show its age, but it is one of the most solid car purchases in Ireland. New model is imminent though, so it's best to wait, or get a good deal.
