SecondHandSense:IT IS a testament to the strength of branding and image that the millionth Audi A3 recently rolled off the production line, having been launched in 1996, writes Donal Byrne.

For the A3 may be a fine car in many respects, but it is also a small car and an expensive one. Its looks seem to have defied the ageing process. Few other cars will attract the single driver, or the young couple, looking for a solid hatchback in quite the same way.

I mention single people and couples because they seem to fit the A3 profile best. Its limited rear space, even in four-door guise, does not make it the most family-friendly car around. However, it would be unfair to reject the A3 on the grounds of practicality. Its main attraction is its driveability.

This is a car that you can use as an everyday runabout, but enjoy far more driving pleasure than you will get with a less expensive or mainsteam car.

The two most popular models on the Irish market are the 1.6 petrol, which has a power output of 102 horse power, and the 1.9 TDi diesel engine, which produces 140 horse power. The former is the ideal choice for a city driver who wants some extra capacity on longer journeys and the latter is ideal for those doing high mileage for business, say. Inside is where Audi logic is at its most apparent. Everything is neat, functional and appropriate.

The A3 has a four-star crash rating in the EuroNCAP programme, which is very good but not best in class. Audi reliability has been improving in recent years. However, some cars have been recalled for problems with a possible fire risk because of faulty flywheels and cracks on a vacuum pipe to the brake servo. As with any second-hand car on which you propose to spend serious money, if you can't get a full service history then get a good mechanic's report.

A 2004 three-door 1.6 petrol model with all standard equipment, including ABS and stability control, and with 50,000km up is on offer for €19,500. A 2006 1.9 diesel with 56,000km up is on offer for €26,950.

In the current climate these prices are too high in my view. There really has never been a better time to shop around and bargain hard.
