Off-road challenge by Range Rover with 05 Sport

The road-based SUV fraternity is set to suffer a fresh assault from off-road traditionalists Land Rover next month

The road-based SUV fraternity is set to suffer a fresh assault from off-road traditionalists Land Rover next month. After the recent launch of the much-improved Discovery 3, aimed at challenging mainstream makers such as BMW and Lexus who have entered the SUV market, the new Range Rover Sport arrives here next month.

This high- performance SUV has a supercharged 390 bhp 4.2-litre V8 engine. Setting its sights on the likes of the Porsche Cayenne and meatier X5s, the Sport will deliver the highest degree of power ever available on a Land Rover.

The Ford-owned company is concentrating its efforts this time on on-road dynamics, with a performance-tuned chassis. The Sport will be unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January, and will be available here from May. Pricing and detailed specification will be announced closer to launch date, but it's expected to fit between Discovery and Range Rover in the Land Rover range. So, expect prices between €80,000 and €100,000.
