Stone houses in the west of Ireland tend to be seen as ideal holiday homes but as Galway city expands and people get used to commuting, houses in towns and villages outside Galway are being bought by city-based workers keen to live in a quieter location.

Mayfly Cottage is a traditional stone cottage on half an acre near Roscahill, which is close to Outghterard and within an easy commute of the city. The two-bed house is for sale through Matt O'Sullivan, who is guiding £285,000 (361,880).

The present owners have completely renovated the house, which was created by joining two stone buildings together. There is a split-level kitchen and dining area with a vaulted ceiling which has been clad in wood. Most of the cottage floors are in a very attractive slate with mosaic borders and the dining area has been floored with old maple that was salvaged from a local ballroom.

When the owners bought the house it had four bedrooms and this configuration could be reinstated, according to the agent.

The name Mayfly Cottage comes from the house's proximity to Lough Corrib.

The house is surrounded by traditional dry-stone walls and the gardens are planted with shrubs and trees. There is stabling for a couple of horses and a small post and railed paddock.
