I’m almost afraid to let this trade secret out, but Hedgeroe, an interiors shop in Kilternan, is such a great source for decorating projects, it seems churlish not to share. Husband and wife Ken and Rhona Roe (she decorated Doonbeg Hotel in Co Clare) have made country style chic.

Furniture is hand-painted in unusual muted colours, weathered oak is a constant, there are lots of Indian embroidered cushions and plenty of linen. It’s more authentic and suitable for Irish homes than the faux-French look of boom times. Prices are moderate – and, having used the furniture for many projects, I can say the quality stands up – and everything is available straight away. Some items could be too twee for some, but it’s easy to pick out great pieces. I’ve used their throws and cushions to liven up an ordinary sofa and have seen their traditional console tables used to great effect when mixed with contemporary furniture.
