Helipad lands Bill Cullen in planning retention battle

Businessman and author Bill Cullen has taken his battle to retain a helipad at his Killarney mansion to An Bord Pleanála.

Businessman and author Bill Cullen has taken his battle to retain a helipad at his Killarney mansion to An Bord Pleanála.

Last February, Kerry County Council refused retention planning permission for a helicopter landing pad at his property in Muckross, in Killarney National Park, but granted permission for the retention of a house, guest cottage and a tennis court. Refusing retention for the helipad, the council said it would adversely affect the natural environment.

In a letter of appeal to the planning board, McGill Planning on behalf of Cullen, argue that, although the planning application was made by Glencullen Properties, the helipad is for the sole use of Cullen and will not be used for commercial purposes. The helipad is located in the middle of evergreen trees and it is not visible from the public road nor does it effect nearby residences, the letter states.

Flights are infrequent, with on average less than one helicopter trip a week taking place at the site in 2006, it adds.

There are around 220 helicopters in use in Ireland, according to the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA).

An Bord Pleanála has refused permission for a number of helipads in recent years.

However, privately registered helicopters do not need a special helipad to land in Ireland.

As long as the landowner has given permission and it is safe to land, helicopters can land anywhere, according to a spokesperson for the IAA.
