Property developer Gerry Gannon's bid to build a helicopter hangar close to Dublin Airport has been refused by Fingal County Council.

Acting on advice from the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA), the council refused permission for the project because it would interfere with the work of the airport's control tower and the capacity of the runway. The proposed hangar would also have safety implications, according to the council. Gannon, head of Gannon New Homes, was seeking to build a 2,728sq m (29,364sq ft) hangar to the rear of the Boot Inn pub on the Naul Road, Cloghran, Co Dublin.

The proposed development would have involved the construction of a single-storey hangar with 18 parking spaces.

The hangar's location was also in conflict with the Dublin Airport Local Area objective to reserve lands for the future expansion of the airport, the council ruled.

In a submission to the council the Dublin Airport Authority said the proposed hangar's location was within 280 metres of the centre line of a runway.

Any movement of helicopters at the facility would "interfere with the safe, orderly and expeditious conduct of operations at Dublin Airport".

Fingal County Council is currently considering a separate application by Mr Gannon that seeks to redevelop the Boot Inn.
