The number of shoppers visiting Grafton Street and Henry Street in Dublin has increased significantly in December, according to the latest measure of pedestrian footfall figures compiled by Gunne Commercial. The agency reported that over 25,000 pedestrians visited Henry Street between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. on a recent Saturday compared to 24,528 on Grafton Street during the same hour.

According to Marie Hunt, head of research at Gunne, the figures were particularly high for both streets on Thursday nights, exceeding the 1998 measurement by an astonishing 100 per cent in Grafton Street and 66 per cent on Henry Street.

The strong performance by the two principal shopping streets in the city centre has not affected most out-of-town shopping centres, particularly Blanchardstown, which is trading especially well. The huge increase in shoppers visiting Blanchardstown in the run-up to Christmas has led to serious traffic problems on occasions.
