Three Italian wines for €10 worth putting in your bank holiday basket

John Wilson’s wines for the weekend: The pick of SuperValu’s Italian festival

SuperValu began an Italian food and wine festival last week, and 13 of its 32 wines are new ones sourced specially. The Castellani Collesano Vermentino (€10) was one of my wines of the week recently, and is well worth trying out. This weekend, why not go Italian with the two wines recommended here?

Ricossa Gavi (€10, down from €13.99, at branches and from supervalu.ie) is fresh and full of rounded yellow apple fruits, with a nicely rounded finish. Drink solo, with summery salads or prawns. (You could also try out the Ricossa Barbera d'Asti, a juicy rounded fruity red wine, also for €10.)

The lightly tannic Santodeno organic Sangiovese from Romagna (€10, down from €14.99), with its dark cherry fruits, would be ideal with a pizza or lighter pasta dishes. (If you feel like splurging, go for its big brother, the more concentrated, structured Borgo dei Guidi Rubicone, for €15, down from €19.99.)
