John Wilson: Two light, summery wines from Tesco for €10 or less

Wines for the Weekend: A Touraine Sauvignon Blanc and a cut-price Beaujolais

The forecast is looking reasonable for the weekend, with little rain and the odd burst of sunshine. So this week two summery, light wines from Tesco to enjoy on balmy evenings outdoors.

The Loire Valley produces a range of crisp dry white wines, many from the Sauvignon Blanc grape. Pouilly-Fumé and Sancerre are the best known, but Touraine Sauvignon is often great value for money. The second wine is a Beaujolais, one of the great summer wines. Light in alcohol, with refreshing fruit, they go well with a wide variety of foods, as well as being perfect on their own. If the weather is hot, you could serve it lightly chilled.

Touraine Sauvignon Blanc 2020, Calvet, €10
Subtle gooseberry aromas and light, refreshing apple and pear fruits, with a crisp, dry finish. Perfect on its own, with creamy goat's cheese and summery salads.

Tesco Beaujolais 2020, €9 (down from €12) until July 6th
Light, juicy strawberry and redcurrant fruits, with a tannin-free easy finish. Drink solo, with barbecued salmon, chicken or pork, or with cold meats.
