Our wedding story: from Connecticut, to Chamonix, to Cloyne

David, from Buttevant, Co Cork, moved to the US in 2009 and met Amelie, from Quebec, a fellow research scientist, while working in Indianapolis, Indiana, in March 2011.

Three months later, David moved to Connecticut, and the couple's first date was at the beach in Niantic.

During their 2½-year long-distance romance, while Amelie was working on a project in Ireland, David came to visit in August 2013. They took a trip to Chamonix, France, where he proposed during a mountain hike.

Ireland was the couple's first wedding choice and during a recce in June 2014, they fell for Barnabrow House, Cloyne, Co Cork. The rest of their planning was done with the help of email, Skype and the Foley family.

Amelie and David were married on August 15th by humanist celebrant Lorraine Mancey O'Brien. During the ceremony, described as "the perfect combination of love, emotion, fun and sincerity", readings were done by the groom's sister Erin Foley and sisters of the bride Sonia and Marie-Eve Dion.

Another of the groom's sisters, Amanda Hynes Johnson, of Ruby Garnet Makeup, did the bridal party's make-up.

Among the 100 guests were David's parents Liam and Betty Foley and the bride's parents, Serge Dion, for his first trip to Ireland, and Francine Brouillette.

The wedding band was Celebration the Band, and the newlyweds' first dance was to Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong, Amelie's late grandfather's favourite song.

David and Amelie have just bought a house in Ledyard, Connecticut, and are planning a three-week honeymoon in New Zealand in December.
