Fashion: Key trends to wear this Spring Summer 2015

Get ahead of the crowd with our guide on the looks to invest in next season

Think ahead to Spring Summer 2015 when the days will be longer, the sun will be shining, and we’ll all be wearing platforms and talking about Watergate. Well not quite the last bit, but you may feel a little time warped next season as the seventies are back in a big way.

It’s not new to re-work a decade (weren’t the 90s in vogue only 5 minutes ago?), however different and unexpected trends can be extracted from certain time periods. Flower power, fringing and fun are some of the more obvious expressions of the seventies, but what other trends have emerged from 2015’s 1970s mash up? We visited the Brown Thomas Spring Summer 2015 catwalk show to find out.

Power Flower Prints

Meryl Streep may have sarcastically deemed florals for Spring ‘groundbreaking’, but next season's florals are not your regular. Big, bold and blooming, whether it was Mary Katrantzou bringing the fun or Céline bringing the glamour, the often graphic representations were seen everywhere. Wear head-to-toe for real impact.

Powder Blue

When we see this colour we imagine a flared two piece suit. complete with ruffled shirt at an American prom. The way it has been applied this season, could not be further from that.

Valentino Dress, €3,980. Gucci Floral Print Dress, €1,500. Roksanda Ilinic Top, €690

Hot Pink

Bright, feminine and demanding of attention, this colour is diametrically opposed to the washed out pink pallette of last season. Wear as a dress to take full feminine advantage. I am woman, hear me roar.

Valentino Dress, €2,500.  Victoria Beckham Swing Drape Dress,  €1,650. Oscar de la Renta Dress, €1,790

Asymmetric Colour Blocking

The asymmetric colour blocking emerging on the catwalks of Spring Summer is reminiscent of 70s film posters mixed with manga cartoons. The colours are primary, clashing and bright in blobs and squares placed thoughtfully. Trippy.

Peter Pilotto Dress, €2,095. David Koma Dress,  €1150. Roksanda Blue Dress Multi Print,  €1215

Zen Minimalism

In 1971 John Lennon sung for a simpler way of life while Yoko Ono strolled around in long white robes. This zen minimalism appears to be another theme designers have picked up on this season. With natural colours and clean lines, this look will be an antidote to the other emerging trends, if bright colours and trippy prints aren’t your bag, man.

Marni Jacket, €1,250, Trousers, €620. Victoria Beckham Coat, €2,385. Céline Top, €1,650, Trousers, €950

It wouldn’t be the 70s without fringing. Wear this look in a material other than suede to keep the look modern.

Dries Van Noten Knit €535

Straps and laces

And talking of straps add detail to any outfit next season with strap happy shoes. We’re especially fond of these Givenchy over-the-knee leather boots.
