DENNIS CAREY

Moving OnCladdagh Records ***

This is a (mostly) refreshing collection of tunes, composed by Denis Carey and featuring a swathe of the best musicians in the country. The swing of Zöe Conway's fiddle and Enda Scahill's banjo on Cajun Céilíare a testament to Carey's ability to marry a lightness of touch with an acute ear for local accents. While the sentiment of Newfoundland Immigrantseems overweaning (with just Carey's piano accompanied by Denis Ryan's tin whistle), Máirtín O'Connor infuses Meagan's Delight with his characteristic effervescence. Still, some stray drum and bass lines drag at O'Connor's momentu. Perhaps a tad more boldness at the mixing desk would have solved the tendency to cleave to the safety net, particularly on the slow airs.
