A SET of eight Dutch marquetry inlaid dining chairs were the top selling lot at Mullens's sale at Woodbrook last Monday evening. The chairs, which included two carvers, sold for £2,100. A yew wood diningroom suite, comprising a table, six chairs and a 13 pane glazed china cabinet, made £1,800, well clear of their catalogue estimate of £1,200-£1,600.

Edwardian furniture continues to sell well at auction in this case a mahogany inlaid mirror backed side cabinet, by Maples and Company, London, sold for £1,750 to a trade buyer.

One of the most unusual pieces of furniture in the sale, a fine 17th century Flemish oak buffet of monumental proportions, fetched £1,600 from a private buyer. Its top estimate had been £3,000. Lot 203, a Victorian style mahogany couch with scroll over arms, and upholstered in lime coloured damask, sold for £1,400, more than double its higher estimate.
