The cost of neutering

Cats and dogs should be neutered at six months' old, which normally costs about €100. Animal welfare groups argue that this is no more expensive than the cost of a night out with a meal or a couple of tickets for a concert. Bigger dogs can be more expensive.

People on lower incomes, including pensioners and those on social welfare, should note that the Dogs Trust has a scheme under which pets can be neutered for as little as €20. The Blue Cross offers the service for one-third of the normal cost in cases of hardship.

Over 300 vets nationally take part in the Dogs Trust scheme, so getting a participating vet shouldn't be a problem.

The Dogs Trust has a special helpline at 1890-946336 which deals with this and related issues.
